Destination or Journey?
Many of us are familiar with the statement, popularized since Joseph Campbell (et al.,), that it is the journey and not the destination that counts. When you look at “goal theory” and diminished motivation or desire as perceptual shifting occurs on the way to the goal you come to realize this. In undertaking the journey and the inner work that brings us to manifesting our goal in time and space we come to realize that what we wanted wasn’t actually what we wanted after all. It is at this point we realize the truth in this statement. Many of these sub-goals are vehicles and carrots that bring us down the road to enlightenment, nirvana or heaven and there are differences in nuances here between Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, Taoism, and others. This is top of the mountain stuff, and we could do several papers on this discussion by itself. But we can classify these as a “states of being” where we actually realize Happiness, Love, Peace, Plenitude and so much more. I want to take a minute to put this in perspective because it brings together several pieces of understanding and the use and efficacy of practice right through the LMP.
The Destination – Yeshua, admonished us to “seek ye first the kingdom of heaven and his righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you.” In another place we find the commandment, “You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.” And, finally in the Lord’s Prayer we find, “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation {lower desire}, but deliver us from evil {things that separate us from you}. For Yours is the kingdom, the power and the glory forevermore. Amen.” (curvy brackets are mine),
Now there are a lot of notes on this set of verses, for example, the last phrase was most certainly added when you look across 6 or 7 extant Greek texts but let’s go with this for a minute) Seek and you shall find …
There are some profound statements in here about destinations, one is a statement about the order of seeking, the second is a command about quantity and energy, the third is about a place which is a state of being and an inter-dimensional location, it is the inter-dimensionality of it that makes it heaven, the reality we forgot. So yes, destinations are really important, there is also a promise in there, “and all these things will be added to you.” This combines with our understanding about manifestation and the isolatory nature of separation, and removing the blocks to Divine Love (Ancient Greek: ἀγάπη, agápē) while moving toward vertical union.
A lot of questions arise in this. Why would a destination be set forth that is unattainable? In another place Jesus says, “and you will do these things and more.” These are statements of realization not some vague unattainable goal! So the question becomes, how do we most proactively get there? I am taking the time to fill this out because, all these pieces are so important in practice.
States of Existence, States of Being, and Ways of Being
We use these terms to represent different aspects of developmental stages in relationship to the human species and other species.
States of Existence - in reality, anyone that is in the act of change goes through different states of existence. This occurs on bio-energetic, bio-chemical, bio-energetic levels and concurrent to changes in consciousness, beliefs, thought patterns and affective states. This said, we use this term to denote changes that occur relative to the types of engaged energetic components a person encompasses in their being. In general, we divide these stages into pre-union, union, post-union states of existence. Each of these have their respective States of Being associated with them.
States of Being - we use this term to define states of consciousness and affective experience relative to specific states of existence. Different states of being are represented by different realized experiential states on what some would call the positive side of this we have examples like: peacefulness, plenitude, joy, love, and happiness to mention a few. It should be noted, that in order to realize these individuals go through times of feeling sad, empty, destitute and more. It is important recognize that these can all be states of being in the process of becoming. This said, realized states of being begin to form a baseline experience that underlies all other experience, whereby an individuals process takes them to realize higher and deeper sub-strata in terms of their baseline state of being.
Ways of Being - for sometime spiritual paths have defined a prescriptive path of behaviors that are deemed good or bad. In reality, our way of being extends from our core operating system or core set of beliefs. These are foundational elements to our lived experience. This said, prescriptive paths in terms of process and spiritual practice provide tools, instruments and navigational guidance as to how we can remove blocks to realizing higher and deeper States of Being which ultimately translates to higher States of Existence.
